Personal:  divorce
Unfortunately, half of today’s marriages end in divorce. Even if a divorce is amicable, knowing your spouse’s financial situation is imperative.

Some things you should consider:
Where are ALL the bank records, real estate deeds, credit card statements, and other documents that will establish a marital standard of living?
Are there any offshore bank or other type accounts? If yes, where are they and can you get to them?
Does your spouse have an employer pension? What is the value?
What life and other insurance is there? Do nay of them have a cash value? Are you the beneficiary?
Are there any stocks, bonds, CDs, Treasury Bills, or other money? Who are the brokers?
Are you listed as a partner in any business?
Are there any safe deposit boxes? What are the contents? Who has access?

These are only a few of the many questions anyone contemplating divorce should consider before openly talking about it. The more you know about your spouse’s finances the better you will be. Discovery is the legal term for making sure everyone has all the information they need. It is costly, time consuming, and usually futile. Know as much as you can about ALL your marital assets before the divorce proceedings.
